What is the difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who specializes in mental health. Because they are physicians, psychiatrists can order medical tests and prescribe medication. Psychologists, on the other hand, hold advanced degrees (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and focus primarily on providing psychotherapy.
Often, the most effective treatment for severe mental health conditions involves a combination of both medication from a psychiatrist and therapy from a psychologist.
